The problem is, the food is buried in the sand where scary waves roll up.
But it's The Mitchells that most embodies what the category is all about, and it's the titanic precedent behind Pixar and Disney's frequent wins which stands as its main obstacle. A hungry sandpiper hatchling ventures from her nest for the first time to dig for food by the shoreline. No movie has ever been nominated for such commonly disparate categories, and indeed it could be considered an underdog in its own right. Uniqueness is certainly not a quality lacking in the last of The Mitchells' competitors, where Flee made Oscar history this year with nominations in not only Best Animated Feature but Best Documentary Feature and Best International Feature Film as well. While there's no shame in mimicking earlier successes, especially when such successes prove so tremendous, they all feel like extremely typical Pixar and Disney fare, seen time and again in Frozen, Moana, Onward, Coco and countless others. Encanto, Luca and Raya and the Last Dragon all feature young heroes with remarkable powers adventuring through their respective magical lands in order to prove themselves to their family and change the lifestyle of their people forever. While The Mitchells' competition is certainly nothing to snub one's nose at and they all have their own specific merits, uniqueness itself isn't exactly a strength three of them share. By the time the Mitchells face off against an army of toasters while a giant laser-vomiting Furby attacks them, it becomes clear the film will never run out of tricks. The characters prove immediately recognizable and endearing, and the action puts them into intense scenarios that are nevertheless ridiculous at face value all while keeping the audience's interest constantly engaged.
The plot itself is fairly straightforward as it follows teenager Katie Mitchell on a road trip with her family to take her away to college when the robot apocalypse busts out.īut throwing around terms like "coming-of-age-tale" or "road trip story" feels reductive because so much of the film is aggressively original. Directed by Michael Rianda and hailing from producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller with experience in works like S pider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and The LEGO Movie, the film mixes visual styles and constant chaos to create an ever-evolving canvas that offers endless entertainment.
Mere minutes into The Mitchells, it's easy to see how original and powerfully energetic the film is.
